Women Empowerment Day

Chairperson of Delhi Commission of Women, Ms. Swati Maliwal graces the occasion of Women Empowerment Day, celebrated by Chetanalaya in Jahangirpuri

Women face many social challenges today whether making soaps and incense in order to secure an income for her family to raising children amidst the harsh economic crisis. A woman is dynamic in many roles she plays from household chores to contributing towards the family income. Keeping the importance of women in mind, around 2700 women gathered together to celebrate “Women Empowerment Day” on 10th October 2015 at Community Hall in Jahangirpuri. “Empowered women is equivalent to empowered society” was the theme of the programme.

A motivational welcome address was delivered by Ms.Vandana Jaiswal, Program Officer inspiring the women to be self-independent. The programme started with the lightening of the lamp by Ms. Swati Maliwal, Chairperson of DCW, Father Savari Raj, Director, Chetanalaya and Mr. Himanshu Rai, Project Coordinator, Chetanalaya. Ganesh Vandana is considered auspicious in the beginning of any event. Hence, the children of the community performed traditional dance on Ganesh Vandana. The programme proceeded with a song “Suno Sangh ki saheli….” sung by Ms Anju, Ms Deepa and Ms Suman members of Chetanalaya family. After this song, a convincing message was conveyed by Father Savari Raj, Director of Chetanalaya on Woman Entrepreneurship. He emphasized on how an economically empowered women can contribute towards the development of the family and the society as a whole.

Ms. Swati Maliwal spoke about the importance of women empowerment and how women can fight for her rights. The motivational messages delivered by her helped women understand their importance in the society. Later, she awarded the women leaders of the community for their exemplary contribution towards the empowerment of women.

Afterwards, a convincing video was showcased on the economic empowerment of women. The video showed the journey of “Lijjat Papad” which was started by a group of 7 women with a small amount and today it is a big brand in the papad category with very high turnover. This video opened the eyes of the women of the community and generated confidence that they also reach the height of success.

Then, Ms Suman spoke on few of the successes achieved in Mahila Panchayat which is a program running under DCW

Then keeping in mind the need to re-energize the community who was sitting quietly for so long, a group dance program was performed by the beneficiaries of Dance Class of Chetanalaya Mukundpur followed by another dance performance by small children. Everyone who was there enjoyed and appreciated the performances and encouraged them by giving them round of applause.

Then the program, coming to an end, witnessed a singing performance given by students of Cutting & Tailoring centre running under Chetanalaya Jahangirpuri.

Other dignitaries present for the event were 2 members from DCW along with Fr Savari Raj, Director, Chetanalaya, Mr Thomas Antony. Program Manager, Chetanalaya, Mr Himanshu Rai, Project Coordinator, Ms Deepa Negi, Area Coordinator, Chetanalaya Mukundpur.

The programme ended with enchanting the slogans on women empowerment and vote of thanks by Ms.Ankita Roy, Program Officer, Chetanalaya.
